Arab Americans must realize that professing their pride in America need not entail a compromise in their faith. There are many Muslim women who cover themselves and walk in modesty and they can serve as better role models for the youth.

The new Miss USA 2010 is a Lebanese American. Rima Fakih of Dearborn Michigan, on 16th May has perhaps become the first Muslim immigrant to be crowned Miss USA.
Some Arab Americans hail her vistory "especially sweet" considering the stereotyping Arabs experience. Rima Fakih, they hope can be a role model for young Muslims and can change the face of Arab Americans from bad to good. Well we will have to see about that. As far as being a Muslim in America is concerned, the country of origin is of no issue.
After Faisal Shahzad attempted to bomb Times Square NY, Muslims have been trying to do damage control. Islam does not preach violence, it does not support intolerance; nor does it promote treachery to one's country.
But Islam does preach modesty. Muslim Americans can easily defend their stand against Faisal Shahzad but how can any Muslim wrap their head around Rima Fakih? And at this point where she is not the only woman strutting the catwalk in a casino 'supporting' a bikini, no one can raise a finger against her without offending the sensitivities of the other contestants in the Miss USA Beauty Pagent.
Arab Americans must realize that professing their pride in America need not entail a compromise in their faith. There are many Muslim women who cover themselves and walk in modesty and they can serve as better role models for the youth. Rima Fakih couldn't even get her answer right when refering to birth control as a "controlled substance"! Even non-Muslims are questioning the hypocrisy of a Muslim woman as Miss USA while the rest of the world is trying to overturn an imminent ban on the Islamic veil Muslim women wear, in Europe.
Rima Fakih herself has not said anything about her religion, except that she and her family celebrate both Muslim and Christian festivities. It would be better if she desn't say anything more than this.
